Dear %PERS_NAME%,

As 2007 winds down we all tend to reflect on the year, and give thought to where we're headed.

One area that several clients have discussed with us is giving back to the community. In Ontario, for every dollar donated to charity (above $200 in a year), you receive a 40 cent tax credit. If you donate shares that have a capital gain, you may be able to net out a benefit of over 50 cents on the dollar. Even with these benefits, Canadians with household incomes of $100,000+, still give on average only $698 a year. During the 'season of giving', it is always good to think about the impact you can have. To find out more about how you can make a real difference without feeling the pinch - try our new TriDelta Donation Planner on our website.

Wishing you fun and happiness throughout the holidays and a wonderful 2008.

TriDelta Presents the Donation Planner

The TriDelta Donation Planner is a unique tool designed to help Canadians figure out what they can afford to give to charity.

Most Canadians give very little to charity, in part because they fear that they might ultimately run out of money.

With the TriDelta Donation Planner, you can see:
  • how much you can easily afford to donate each year
  • your lifetime donation amount
  • your lifetime tax savings from these donations
  • how much your Estate will likely be worth AFTER all these donations
"We designed the Donation Planner with the goal of helping Canadian charities and Canadian donors" said Asher Tward, VP Estate Planning at TriDelta Financial Partners. "We found that this tool helped provide many individuals with the comfort to make larger donations because they have the confidence that they will never outlive their money" said Tward.

If you are involved with a charity that would like to use this tool on their website – at no cost – please let me know. The benefit to the charity is simply that people who use this tool likely will give larger donations than those who don't.

What is going on in the market?
By Bruce Campbell, President, Campbell and Lee Investment Management

There's no way to sugar-coat November, it was the worst month in over 5 years for North American stock exchanges. A previous fall of 6 1/2% had not been seen since 2002.

Planned giving begins with financial planning
By Frank Wiginton CFP, FMA, CIM, FCSI, Senior Financial Planner

You have made a decision to give money to a charity or organization but do you know how much you can give?

Is there a more effective way to give the money? Do you have to wait until you pass away before giving it away? (Or can you give some of it away now and for the rest of your life?)

To answer all these questions you need to understand your financial situation now and through death.

Things to do before the end of the year
  • Make any outstanding RESP contributions. Remember that you will now maximize government grants at $2,500 per child per year.
  • Make any charitable contributions in order to maximize the tax benefit.
  • For tax reasons, let us know if you would like to do any “tax loss” selling to offset capital gains. These trades need to be complete no later than December 21st to qualify for 2007 taxes.
